VIA Defines Pico-ITX Form Factor, the World’s Smallest x86 Mainboard
Tiny 10cm x 7.2cm complete PC platform fits into palm of hand, more than 75% smaller than the Mini-ITX, embodies VIA’s “Small is Beautiful” strategy to inspire x86 system innovation
Taipei, Taiwan, 19 April 2007 - VIATechnologies, Inc, a leading innovator and developer of silicon chip technologies and PC platform solutions, today announced the VIA VT6047 Pico-ITX form factor reference design, the smallest full-featured x86 mainboard in the industry designed for a new world of ultra compact embedded PC systems and appliances.
The Pico-ITX form factor is the latest advance in VIA’s proven record on platform miniaturization. The Mini-ITX mainboard, at 17cm x 17cm, which recently celebrated its 5th anniversary as an industry standard form factor with wide market adoption, was followed by the Nano-ITX form factor at 12cm x 12cm, exactly 50% of the size of the Mini-ITX. Now, the Pico-ITX, at 10cm x 7.2cm and 50% of the size of the Nano-ITX form factor, truly embodies VIA’s “Small is Beautiful” technology design strategy of shrinking the form factor to drive the x86 platform into ever smaller systems and whole new device categories.
Leveraging VIA’s extensive expertise in miniaturization at the silicon level through major advances in power efficiency, thermal management and feature integration, the VIA VT6047 Pico-ITX mainboard was designed to be powered by one of VIA’s energy efficient processor platforms, such as the VIA C7 or fanless VIA Eden processor in the 21mm x 21mm nanoBGA2 package, combined with feature-rich VIA system media processors to enable the board to pack a performance punch in a tiny, low heat, low power package.
“The Pico-ITX represents VIA’s commitment to spearhead x86 innovation through our proven technology leadership in driving down the platform size,” said Richard Brown, Vice President of Corporate Marketing, VIA Technologies, Inc. “As with the Mini-ITX and Nano-ITX form factors before it, this new platform has raised the excitement level among enthusiasts and customers alike, firing the imagination an almost unlimited range of what were previously impossibly small systems.”
More details about the Pico-ITX form factor and the VIA VT6047 Pico-ITX mainboard reference design may be found in the “VIA Pico-ITX Form Factor” white paper, available for download from the VIA website at: www.via.com.tw/en/initiatives/spearhead/pico-itx/.
The VIA VT6047 Pico-ITX reference design has been successfully demonstrated during international trade shows this year, including during CES, CeBIT Germany and Embedded System Conference West. The VIA Platform Solutions Division will announce the first commercial mainboard based on the Pico-ITX form factor shortly.

Intel introduced Mini-ITX mainboard with Celeron 215 processor
Intel's entry into the Mini ITX arena is the Desktop Board D201GLY, which it's pitching at providers of low-cost - sub $300 - computers, particularly those pitched at "emerging markets" - what used to be called, in less euphemism-friendly times, 'poor countries'.
The 17 x 17cm board incorporates a soldered-in-place 1.33GHz Celeron 215 processor, SiS662 integrated chipset, a single DIMM slot, legacy ports, 10/100Mbps Ethernet, a PCI slot, six USB ports and a seventh mounted internally for "an OS on a Flash drive" - an item Intel launched not so very long ago.

Thermaltake LANBOX Lite Mini-ITX Case

Power And Beauty –
The Ultimate Small Form Factor Chassis:LANBOX Lite
The release of LANBOX redefined the true meaning of small form factor and portable PC market ushering in a new generation of mobile power gaming PC. Today, Thermaltake is broadening the flexibility of LANBOX series chassis by introducing LANBOX Lite that allows user from different market segment to take full advantage of all the great features found on LANBOX.
The mirror-finish found on LANBOX Lite exhibits extraordinary elegance along with steel meshed front bezel design for greater thermal performance.
In addition, the LANBOX Lite inherits LANBOX spirit. Unlike tower chassis, small form factor PC often lacks sufficient cooling capability or expandability to allow enthusiasts to build a capable gaming machine. Designed from the ground up, LANBOX Lite is a fully modular chassis where all components may be removed from the body for easier installation.
Everything from Motherboard Tray to 5.25” Bay Drive cage can be easily removed with a twist of the thumb screws.
Thermal engineering played an equally important part when designing the LANBOX Lite. Today’s most high-end graphic cards or processor often requires added cooling and high-wattage power supply in order to operate at their maximum capability.
Before, gaming enthusiasts that opted to build a small form factor PC were limited to mid-end graphic card or processor that resulted in mediocre performance.
Today, LANBOX Lite enables the use of standard Micro ATX motherboard, most high-end CPU, powerful graphic card and even a standard full-size PSU; the result, a small form factor PC that is equally powerful as full sized PC.
LANBOX Lit is the ultimate chassis solution for your high-efficiency small form factor PC.
