VIA Introduces New pc3500 Mainboard

Enables OEMs and SIs to build most energy-efficient Windows Vista PCs that draw over 50% less power than the latest Energy Star requirements
Taipei, Taiwan, Tuesday 21st August 2007 - Further strengthening its leadership in providing the world's most energy-efficient computing platforms, VIA Technologies, Inc. today announced the VIA pc3500 Mainboard, a low power, feature-rich platform that enables OEMs and System Integrators to build Windows Vista desktop PCs that draw less than 24 watts in Idle State - less than half the requirement of the U.S. EPA's latest Energy Star Program Requirement for Computers: Version 4.0.
In addition, a system based around the VIA pc3500 Mainboard draws only 1.09 watts in Sleep Mode, and 0.68 watts in Standby (Off Mode), comfortably meeting the Energy Star requirements for a Category A system, as summarized in the table below. The system even draws under 35 watts when playing back a DVD, one of the most power-intensive computing applications.

About the VIA pc3500 Mainboard
The VIA pc3500 is the latest addition to the energy efficient VIA pc-1 Mainboard line, and is based on the VIA CN896 digital media IGP chipset, certified by Microsoft for Windows Vista Basic and featuring the VIA Chrome9 HC IGP with a DirectX 9.0 3D accelerator for high performance, a 2D accelerator for productivity applications, and the Chromotion 3.0 video display engine for advanced hardware-based video processing. Combined with the power efficient VIA C7-D processor supporting the 400MHz VIA V4 bus, the VIA pc3500 mainboard delivers high performance and a rich digital media experience at an average power consumption of less than 25 watts.
The VIA pc3500 Mainboard features two DDR2 DIMM slots, supporting up to 2GB 400/533/667MHz memory, and provides additional expansion flexibility with its PCI Express x16 slot and PCI slot. A variety of industry standard power consumption tests were conducted on the following system configuration:

Mini-ITX PowerPC system includes Linux
A board vendor in China/Taiwan is touting a mini-ITX system based on Freescale's fastest PowerQUICC II processor. Micetek, which specializes in 8- and 32-bit processor development boards, said its MPC8349E-mITX system comes with Linux, and can be used to build networking, communications, and "pervasive computing" equipment.
Micetek's mini-ITX system is based on its MPC8349E-mITX board, which it appears to have originally developed for Freescale. Freescale resells the board as its MPC8349E-mITXE reference platform, and will feature the board in this fall's 23-city MontaVista/Freescale roadshow. First Look VIA PX10000 Pico-ITX Motherboard

Unless you are a big fan of small form-factor computing, you probably haven’t been tracking the development of VIA’s Pico-ITX motherboards. This form-factor was announced at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show, but it has been almost impossible to get your hands on a motherboard and the official U.S. release has yet to happen. A few samples have made their way to reviewers and developers, but because of their rarity coverage has been sparse.
If you are not familiar with Pico-ITX, all you have to know is it is a newer and smaller motherboard size than what we have seen before. A full-sized ATX motherboard is 12″ x 9.6″ (305mm x 244mm) and Mini-ITX is 17cm x 17xcm, which makes it much smaller than the average system. Nano-ITX, which was announced in March 2004, but is mainly used for industrial and business systems, is 12cm x 12cm. Pico-ITX has cut the size down once again, and measures in at an incredible 10cm x 7.2cm, but has retained almost all of the features and functionality of the larger platforms.
