Aaeon EMB-820T Mini-ITX SBC does TV out, surround sound

Aaeon has announced a "value-positioned" mini-ITX SBC (single-board computer) that can be used to create a media server. The EMB-820T is based on AMD's Athlon-family embedded processors, and features TV output and 5:1 surround sound, according to the company.

(Click here for a larger view of the Aaeon EMB-820T)

The EMB-820T is offered without a processor or memory installed, but accepts AMD's Athlon-derived NX1250, NX1500, or NX1750. Dual 184-pin DDR DIMM slots accept up to 2 GB of RAM, Aaeon says.

The board's graphics capabilities are implemented with an SIS 741CX graphics chipset. Its TV output serves up both NTSC and PAL video, while resolution is said to be up to 1600 by 1200 pixels on either a CRT or LCD. The LCD interface supports LVDS and 4-, 5-, or 8-wire resistive touchscreens.

The EMB-820T includes a Mini PCI slot that could, for example, be used to install a wireless network adapter. Unusually, the motherboard does not include Ethernet. Other expansion possibilities include a standard PCI card slot along with a Type II CompactFlash slot, and a floppy drive connector and 40-pin IDE connector.

Features and specifications cited by Aaeon include:
  • Processor -- AMD Geode NX1250, NX1500, or NX1750
  • Memory -- dual 184-pin DDR DIMM sockets, for up to 2 GB total DRAM
  • Display:
      resolutions up to 1600 x 1200 pixels
    • NTSC and PAL video output

Ibase Mini-ITX SBC aims "long-life" Athlons at multimedia apps

Ibase Technology has announced a mini-ITX format single-board computer (SBC) that features a embedded processors and chipsets from AMD. The MI930 is aimed at device-makers requiring enhanced graphics and multimedia performance, and long-term support, according to the company.

The MI930 incorporates the M690T chipset AMD introduced last April. This supports various AMD processors via a 1GHz HyperTransport interface, and connects to AMD's SB600 southbridge.

According to IBase, the MI930 also features AMD's 940-pin AM2 socket, which accepts single-core Athlon 64 and dual-core 64 X2 processors. AMD reaffirmed its commitment to the single-core product line in September, releasing the Athlon 64 Models 2000+, 2600+, and 3100+, and promising to keep them on the market for at least five years.

Integrated graphics on the MI930 is provided by ATI, via the M690T's Radeon X700-based graphics engine. This is said to integrate a transition-minimized differential signaling (TMDS) controller, offering full DirectX 9.0 capabilities on DVI and LVDS displays.

The MI930 also has a plenitude of ports, some of them brought to standard connectors at the edge of the board, others available via onboard headers. Examples of the former, according to the company, include the board's PS/2 keyboard and mouse connectors, COM1 serial port, and a DVI interface. Onboard headers, in contrast, provide access to functionality such as 7.1 channel audio and the built-in SATA II controller.

Features and specifications listed by Ibase for the MI930 include:
  • Processor -- AMD Athlon 64 or Athlon 64 X2, clocked at up to 2.8 GHz
  • Memory -- 2 x 200-pin DDR2, supporting up to 4 GB of RAM
  • Graphics/multimedia:
    • Supports dual display on any two of CRT, DVI, LVDS
    • Resolutions up to 2048 x 1536 (CRT), 1600 x 1200 (LVDS), and 1600 x 1200 (DVI)
    • DirectX 9.0 support
    • 3D texture support, including projective 3D textures
    • OpenGL support
    • Hardware acceleration for MPEG and WMV9 playback
    • "HD Audio" via ATI SB600 chipset
    • 7.1 audio output via Realtek ALC888
  • Networking -- 2 x 10/100/1000 Ethernet ports via Marvell 88E8053 chipset
  • Other I/O ports:
    • 2 x RS-232 serial (one internal, one external)
    • 6 x USB 2.0 (four external, two internal)
    • PS/2 mouse and keyboard ports
    • mic in, line in, line out (external)
  • Expansion:
    • 2 x SATA II
    • 40-pin IDE (UDMA 33/66/100)
    • PCI slot
    • 8 x 2 header for adapter card ID 394 (2 or 4 serial ports) or ID 395 (TPM 1.2)
  • Power -- ATX and BTX standard power connector
  • Dimensions -- 6.7 by 6.7 inches (170 x 170 mm)
  • Operating temperature -- 0-60 deg. C
Operating system support was not detailed, but previous boards from this vendor offer drivers for Windows XP, 2000, NT, and 98.
